The Weaver

It's been a hot second, hasn't it?

I actually wrote 3 entries back in the fall, but never posted them.

But here I am. Here we are.

35 weeks pregnant (today) with Justice baby #13.

Steve is as full as ever at Justice Fitness, working from about 5AM to 12PM every day but Sunday, and going back up on most week-day afternoons for a couple of hours. His time spent at home is on making protein shakes for his clients, all of my (and probably most of the kids, ah) food :), and relentlessly parenting this rambunctious group of 5 kids under the age of 12.

Hannah (12), Hope (almost 10), Hayden (6), Hunter (4), and Hudson (almost 2) are wide open and, I think (at least I hope!), loving life. We started traditional school this past fall. While the transition from 6 years of homeschool wasn't EASY, it's been GOOD. Hannah has had the toughest time, but who would want to do 6th grade over again? I know I sure wouldn't. Through the highs and the lows of this past school year, we are GROWING - all of us - into, we pray, more of the image of Christ, Whom we long to love with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. The community at Carmel Christian School is incredible, and we are grateful for the staff there in helping us raise this crew. The kids still love being together at home. While the times when they are all home together is more infrequent because of school and sports, it is almost sweeter. Goodness, I hope they love each other forever.

As the arrival of this baby approaches, probably very soon (the girls came in week 37 and the boys came in week 38), I wanted to pause and give God the thanks He is due for His incredible grace toward us in this "Crazy Wonderful Justice Life". Who knew what that title would mean when I named this blog right after we got married 13 years ago? As one of my dear friends would say, "Manohman".

There's been several moments since 2009 when, I don't know really how to describe it other than that time seemed to stop. And not really in a good way. It's been those times when you feel like you want to wake up from a really bad dream; when you don't feel like you can breathe; when its almost as if you are staring at yourself from outside yourself. One was when Steve was cut from the Colts. Another was when we learned I was carrying 7 children. A third was when I got so incredibly sick - physically, psychologically, and spiritually - after having Hudson, not too long ago. Most recently, it was the September night when Steve found a positive pregnancy test on the floor of our downstairs half-bath (he wasn't supposed to know it was there until the morning). The first word out of his mouth wasn't a holy one. I just sat on the couch, trying to breathe. His vasectomy consult was scheduled for the next day.

So here we are. Not always overwhelmed, but sometimes so. Not always exhausted, but often feeling that way. Not consistently frustrated, but the temptation constantly looms. And we are about to welcome another life into this so imperfect family.

I think the only thing that keeps us going is the time we get alone with God in the wee hours of each morning. God is good is to keep us wanting Him. His Word and prayer are our daily food. I don't mean to sound pious here. Honestly, it's - He's - the only fountain that doesn't run dry.

I came across this poem recently. It's been such a gift:

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not ’til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned

He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

-Grant Colfax Tullar, The Weaver

I don't think I would have chosen the dark threads that have been woven in my life, before they happened. But (and some of the reason I have been led to write this, after speaking to someone recently who was helped by MESSIAH's story) in and after those "dark threads" were woven, I experienced the reality of God and His Word in ways I would have never experienced otherwise, I wouldn't take those dark threads out for nuthin'.

I'll end with these two quotes, because they say it way better that I ever could. I just want to say, "God, thank you. Thank you for the dark threads as well as for the ones of gold and silver. You truly know best. What you will, when You will, how You will. Amen".

Have we forgotten our pitiful failures in preaching and prayer when we [didn’t wait on] God for strength? [Of] those times of groaning, when [no one has] believed our report because the Lord’s arm was not revealed. I call to remembrance all my failures as I stand on this hill of joy. I doubt not, that on the field of Ebenezer there were the graves of thousands who[’d] been slain in fight. Let the graves of our past proud notions, the graves of our self-confidence, the graves of our creature-strength and boasting, stir us up to praise the Lord who ha[s] [thus far] helped us. … Look to your former defeats. Do you return victorious? You would have returned with your garments trailed in the [mud], and your shield [broken], if God had not been upon your side. Oh, [you] that have proven your weakness, perhaps by some terrible fall, or in some sad disappointment, let the recollection of the spot where you were vanquished constrain you the more to praise the Lord who ha[s] helped you even to this day to triumph over your adversaries.

-Spurgeon, “Ebenezer!,” 159–60

What an amazing thing it is that God is the God who is able to turn our failures into triumph. The very things that we thought meant the end of our usefulness, the conclusion of our pilgrimage—upon reflection, that has been the very seedbed, out of weakness and failure and disappointment, that God has chosen to make you the individual that you are, to make a church the way he wants it to be.

Further Up, Further In

I've started a couple posts since Hayden was born, but never finished.

I wonder why...

A new baby, school for two, cooking, and cleaning have left very little quiet time for this girl.
The few moments I get early in the morning are spent filling my tank with Jesus.

Its all good though. ALL good.

I also have thought about "ending" this "blog" with the announcement of Hayden's birth, ever since he was born. It's quite an end to quite a story, right?

I started this thing in 2009 to keep in touch with friends and family from home, because college and the work kept us away. Only God knew then what this platform would ultimately be used for. His providence is literally AWE-some.

I couldn't have asked for a better gift than this "online journal" (as I like to call it - not fond of the word "blog" for some reason - probably related to my own insecurity!) to document and share the story of messiah. I recently printed it out into a book. To see the events unfold in real-time so stirs my affections for God. I have found that our personal stories prove that what the Bible says is true. Our experiences testify to ultimate reality as it is revealed in Scripture (whether we want them to or not).

So, I think I am going to say goodbye here. Not that I really have "readers"... but I say goodbye for me. For closure. Perhaps for something new.

Over the last month or so, we have felt a new stirring from the Lord. We always want to go deeper with Him. But this time, its big. We feel less and less at home here. The safety and comfort of our current lives are stifling our joy more than ever. We are Christian hedonists. We fully believe that we are most satisfied when God is most glorified in us.

After 20 years of reading God's Word, I see two major themes: God's glory and my joy. The Lord has been so gracious to show me that they are in direct proportion to each other. The notion that I must be  less happy to give God more glory is just not true. Unfortunately many people, Christians included, believe this. I used to believe it, to be honest. But discovering this truth has been SO liberating, SO empowering, SO...to use the word again...AWESOME.

So, Steve and I are asking God what He wants to do with us now. Maybe its starting a non-profit. Maybe its making ministry our full-time vocation. Maybe its becoming missionaries to an unreached people group. Maybe it's writing a book.

We are not sure ... yet.

But we are sure of this: we exist to glorify God BY enjoying Him as much as we possibly can. The more we can rid ourselves of our dependency on the things of this earth, the more of Him we will enjoy and therefore, the more He will be glorified in us - which is why we were made in the first place.

Asking Him to help us go further up and further in (as Aslan would say). Whatever it costs.

Love,

Lindsey and Steve

Hayden Thomas

Tuesday was awesome.
Little did I know that it was going to be the last day we could have taken maternity pictures.

It began with a great workout,

ensued with a trip to the doctor where we saw our favorites and a trip out to JAARS in some beautiful weather,

ended with pictures and a sweet dinner out with grandparents,

and a full moon.

Wednesday started out just as well as Tuesday.

Psalm 39.
Whispers from the King:

Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength...the glory due His name.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
The God of glory thunders...the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth...
May the Lord give strength to His people!
May the Lord bless his people with Peace!

A lot of energy, an awesome ride to Bethel's new "Have It All", sweet lap with girls, school, gymnastics and

a really painful 2 hours of labor with

Kristen - the same as we had for Messiah,
my water breaking on its own,
Steve holding strong by my side all the way,
and crying...how sweet the sound.

Amazing grace.

Hayden Thomas Justice,
our rainbow baby,

7 lbs, 14 ounces,
19.5 inches,
healthy, happy, alive.

Born on March 23rd, 2016,
exactly 18 months after his sisters came and left on September 23rd, 2014.

Thursday.
Psalm 30.
Shouts FOR the King!

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing:
you have loosed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,
that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Prone to Wander

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it.
Prone to leave the God I love.
Take my heart Lord, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above...

This whole pregnancy, I have feared going into labor too early. Now that I am past 37 weeks, I have been anxious for the baby to arrive! How faithless am I? Where is my gratitude? Where is my patience and trust in the Lord who is so mighty, so powerful, so sovereign over every detail of my life?

I have gone through a range of emotions over these past 2 weeks. First, it was utter elation and thankfulness that I passed the 37 week mark! Then, as the nights began to accumulate with more sleeplessness, contractions, and questions about when the baby is coming, I find myself battling anxiety. But the time has not been wasted. The Lord has shown me a lot about His character in these long days.

God is sovereignly purposeful. There are 1000+ reasons why this baby has not come yet. I can't even begin to conjecture as to "why". God's sovereign control over the big and small things of all life is mind boggling and extends to all circumstances for all peoples. As John Piper says,

Indeed, if you could see what God could see (which we never will, because we will never be infinite), we would see millions upon millions of purposes in every action of the Son of God. God is never doing just one thing in what He does with us. He is always doing thousands of things that we cannot see. He never has only one purpose in what He does. He always has thousands of purposes, in everything He does. He is infinitely wise, and everything He does relates to everything else that He does sooner or later. For those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, all of them - all of them! - work together for good.
-You will Never Be Thirsty Again
(John Series, June 14 2009)

God is immensely powerful. I had Hannah at 37.4 weeks. I had Hope at 37.0 weeks. By all practical measures (including actual physical ones), this baby should be here. But the Lord is stronger than any force on this earth. We truly have no ultimate control over our lives. Messiah taught me this on a whole new level. It's humorous to hear how much advice I have received about what might bring this baby ... spicy food, weather changes, doing a headstand while singing coom-by-ya (haha kind of kidding on that one). But seriously, without intent to "induce" labor, I am still running, walking a ton, jumping on trampolines with Hope (because she begged me to!) ... just going on with life as usual. Nothing is going to bring this baby here but God. When we think we ultimately cause things, we are so so wrong. God causes things. Period.

God is REALLY gracious and merciful. If God has revealed one thing to me, it is this: I carried messiah wayyyy longer than I should have. The fact that 6 healthy baby girls lived happily and healthfully in my womb for 21 weeks is nothing short of a modern-day miracle. My doctor told me this early on in my pregnancy: that he was extremely surprised I carried them for as long as I did (which he said he would not have told me then). I didn't fully believe him, because I regretfully carried a weight of guilt for not carrying them longer, as if it was my fault. But God, in his glorious sovereign grace, gave me many more days with those girls than the natural world will ever be able to merit. This has been such a precious revelation and one that brings me to tears on a regular basis.

So, here I am. Sitting on the patio in my sports bra, getting some rays (what awesome weather we are having), at 38.5 weeks. Continuing on with life as usual - waking early, spending precious time with my Sustainer, exercising, schooling the girls, keeping the home, making food for the man, training some wonderful ladies, and doing all of the little things in between (you know, like throwing 6-year-old birthday parties, playing with friends, cleaning the linen closet, building tree houses... bahaha). Praise God for the ability to still do this! As far as we can tell, me and baby are healthy and strong. I have a newfound peace...one that the Lord has been working in my heart over these past days.

I ask for God to be my everything. I ask that He be to me what no person or experience will ever be able to be. I ask that He keep the baby healthy. I ask that He give us more and more patience and revelation as He be our strength. I ask Him to show Jesus to us as glorious - as the Word, the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. I ask for a fresh baptism of His spirit every morning, for without it we have no hope. I ask that He keep us believing on and trusting in Him, because only He can. I ask Him to be our joy, because nothing else will last or be as full as He is in our hearts.

We love you baby.
We love you Lord.
Thank you. With words that the heart can't express....
Thank you.

May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy.
Colossians 1:11

37

Today, I am 37 weeks pregnant! Let me say that one more time...today, I am 37 WEEKS PREGNANT!

The Maker of man became man that He ... the Bread, might be hungry; that He, the fountain, might thirst; that He, the Light, might sleep; that He, the Way might be wearied by the journey; that He, the Truth, might be accused by false witnesses; that He, the Judge of the living and the dead, might be brought to trial by a mortal judge; that He, justice, might be condemned by the unjust; that He, Discipline, might be scourged with whips; that He, the Foundation, might be suspended on a cross; that Courage might be weakened; that Security might be wounded; that Life might die. To endure these and similar indignities for us, to free us, unworthy creatures, He who existed as the Son of God before all ages, without a beginning, deigned to become the Son of Man ... He did this although He who submitted to such great evils for our sake had done no evil and although we, who were the recipients so much good at His hands, had done nothing to merit these benefits.
-Augustine of Hippo
(354-430)

My heart cries with exuberant joy:
"Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"
Matthew 21:9

Dear Baby Justice #10,
Hi there sweet one. The doctor says you may be coming soon. I feel the same. But only God knows when you will make your arrival. I've been fearful of you coming too early for 37 weeks now, but today this fear exposes my faithlessness. I wish I trusted God more. He has brought you to 37 weeks! How can I ever thank Him enough? He has written you into quite a story ... one that no earthly man could contrive. I wonder what He has planned for your life. I consider that it may be something spectacular. Your Daddy and I have prayed for and about you for ... well ... a very long time. Your sisters are SO excited to meet you. I think you will like them, even though they may annoy you a lot at first :). We will just roll with it, right? Your Daddy gets tears in his eyes when he thinks about you. He loves you and even came up with your name last night. I can't wait to see you in his arms.

We love you more than words can say, little one. May you come in your perfect time and in your perfect way. We will wait. We will wait on the Lord. He is good. He is so so good. We want nothing more than for you to know and love Him.

For now, I'll keep reminding Daddy that a watched pot never boils :)

Love,

Mommy
